LED 4 Life
When we recommend this product
Although lighting is usually a small portion of your home energy use, there is is still value in replacing your incandescent and compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs with Long-lasting - LED (Light Emitting Diodes) bulbsover time. LED bulbs last up to 10 times as long as compact fluorescents, and far longer than typical incandescent. Since LEDs do not have a filament, they are not damaged under circumstances when a regular incandescent bulb would be broken. Because they are solid, LED bulbs hold up well to jarring and bumping. In addition LED bulbs are cool compared to halogens and mercury free. Best of all LED light bulbs use only 2-10 watts of electricity (1/3rd to 1/30th of Incandescent or CFL) and because these bulbs last for years, energy is saved in maintenance and replacement costs.
How to get the most from this product
Surge protection unit installed on your electrical powerboard is recommended in areas where there is high occurrences of black-outs and /or power surges to protect all your electrical appliances.
If you are considering replacing halogen downlights with LED downlights, it is often a good idea to rationalise your lighting at the same time. Downlights were designed for spotlighting, but in recent years have been used by many builders to provide ambient lighting. As a result new homes often have a large array of downlights which not only consume energy but also create heat loss through the holes cut in the ceiling.
Some simple options to consider are:
• Reduce the number of downlights to the areas they are really useful and then replace with LED alternatives with insulation covers (see draught proofing).
• Put LED lights on separate switches so you only have them turned on when you need them.
• Use other forms or lighting such as standing lamps in rental situations so you don't need to use the downlights at all.
Most importantly if you are upgrading or removing LEDs make sure you use a licensed electrician and use the disruption as an opportunity to upgrade your ceiling insulation.
